An ADU Star Is Born

Brisbane, California is fondly known as the City of Stars. The tradition began in 1939 when a local resident, Mr. Gaynor, placed a large green star high on the hills above Kings Road. Inspired, the Chamber of Commerce built 20 more stars on their own and passed the out to residents, encouraging others to follow,  the tradition lives on today, with most homes in Brisbane proudly displaying one.

Our clients, after welcoming their first child, found their single-story 808-square-foot starter home too small. Zoning regulations prevented a standard expansion, but an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) offered the perfect solution.

Working closely with the Planning Department, we designed the maximum allowable 800-square-foot ADU with a two-car garage and shared entry. The result is a striking, asymmetrical two-story design with redwood accents, metal railings, and a cantilevered wraparound canopy. A NanaWall moving glass wall system opens to a second-story deck, creating a seamless flow for indoor-outdoor living. We also refreshed the exterior of the original home for a cohesive look.

Today, the property shines with two stars - three if you count the design.
