Dramatic Light and Space Additions in the San Francisco, California Miraloma Park Neighborhood
In the remodel of this house in San Francisco's Miraloma Park neighborhood we combined dramatic spatial effects with industrial details. The original tunnel entrace and central atrium were typical of what is called Marina-style homes in San Francisco. By filling in the old atrium and creating a series of skylights and roof monitors, we were able to add needed living space and create an inwardly focused house flooded with light. A curving stair with perforated metal guardrails echoes the shape of the skylight above it. Slots filled with glass block spearate walls in a sawtooth configuaration in the living room. Steel posts and beams are celebrated by leaving them exposed and painted with primer. The entire kitchen roof is higher than the rest of the house allowing clerestory windows on all sides. Interior clerestory openings allow light from the stair and kitchen to spill into each other and the hallway.
