Mark Brand Architecture San Francisco project
In the remodel of this house in Miraloma Park we combined dramatic spatial effects with industrial details. The original tunnel entrance and central atrium were typical of what are called Marina-style homes in San Francisco. By filling in the atrium and creating a series of skylights and roof monitors, we were able to add needed living space and create an inwardly focused house flooded with light. A curving stair with perforated metal guardrails echoes the shape of the skylight above. Slots filled with glass block separate walls in a saw tooth configuration at the living room. Steel posts and beams are celebrated by leaving them exposed and painted with primer. The entire kitchen roof is higher than the rest of the house, allowing clerestory windows on all sides. Interior clerestory openings allow light from the stair and kitchen to spill into each other and the adjacent hallway.
